Tea tree oil has been used for many years in both traditional and alternative medicine, due to its natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and as it is now widely used in skincare products, it seemed a natural progression to include tea tree oil in our new shaving products.

This high quality shaving cream will ensure a smooth shave, as the natural essential oil will help calm the newly shaved skin and is also the ideal solution to reduce any post-shave redness. Tea Tree oil is capable of penetrating the lower layers of the skin with its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing qualities, to encourage the formation of new tissue, following the shave.

The Gentleman’s Shop is delighted to announce that it acquired the Coate’s company in May 2010. As a result of this we have inherited a selection of unique hand made shaving and hair brushes and are currently re-introducing Coate’s shaving cream.

James Coate established his first brush works in London in 1847 relocating in 1883, opening factories in Axminster, Devon and Chard, Somerset. In 1941 another shaving brush manufacturer, A Simpson lost their London factory, as a result of enemy bombing and in the spirit of wartime co-operation shared Coate’s production facilities in Somerset. This partnership proved so successful that the two companies continued to work under this arrangement until production ceased in1990, as a result of a period of financial difficulty.

The companies were rescued by friends David Carter and Francis Woodhouse who continued the manufacture of Simpson’s shaving brushes using the traditional handmade techniques and also Coate’s brand shaving creams. In 2008 the Simpson shaving brush part of the business was sold to another UK manufacturer, who continue to ensure the high standards of production.

Going forward, it is our mission to ensure the future of Coate’s as a leading manufacturer of high quality shaving products. We have today launched the very first Coate’s website, www.coates1847.com.

Parker Butterfly Safety Razor
Parker Butterfly Safety Razor

Forget the multi bladed razors available at supermarkets, guys are buying these traditional safety razors! At only £15.00 for 100 blades that’s nearly 2 years shaving, none of this 76p a week nonsense…

To encourage sales we have reduced the price of all Parker Safety razors by a staggering 20% down from £25.00 to £20.00. This means that ours are amongst the cheapest available on the Internet.

This safety razor from Parker brings a futuristic design to traditional safety razor shaving.

The black finish gives it a more contemporary feel and the patterned 3½ inch (9cm) long handle gives very good grip. The weight of the razor is divided uniformly throughout, making it incredibly balanced and well suited to shaving with even gentle strokes.

Features the distinctive Parker ‘butterfly’ opening mechanism whereby the handle is twisted to open the head which is undoubtedly the simplest and safest way to insert safety razor blades.

Castle Forbes, back in stock!

Castle Forbes Perfumery
Castle Forbes Perfumery

After much disruption to their production schedule caused by a shortage of essential oils I’m delighted to announce that we now have a full range of Castle Forbes shaving creams back in stock!

Here is a little about the company. In 1996 the former dairy beside Castle Forbes was converted into the world’s smallest perfumery to accommodate Jinny Forbes’ passion for scents and essential oils which she uses to complement her home.

With the help of family friend and perfumer Andrew French, and using only the finest natural oils in the classical manner of “Haute Parfumerie”, the Castle Forbes Collection has evolved into an exclusive range of top-quality fragrances.

Now it includes eau de toilettes, shaving creams, pre- and after-shaves for men. Firm favourites here at The Gentleman’s Shop.

Boticario de Havana Fragrance, Back in stock…

June 9th, 2010

We have a shop full of fantastic fragrances but a personal favourite of mine is the Archipelago Botanicals Boticario de Havana Personal Fragrance.

A truly intoxicating fragrance: tobacco flower, orange blossom, patchouli and honeysuckle with clean and citrusy top notes of bergamot. Presented in a 50ml glass atomiser bottle.

Boticario de Havana Personal Fragrance

Boticario de Havana Personal Fragrance

In the 1940′s the world flocked to Havana; they came for the nightlife, but left with the secrets of the “boticarias” – the small apothecaries that dotted the side streets and specialized in natural skin care remedies made from local plant materials. Coffee bean, tobacco flower and pure essences and extracts of orange, sugar cane and sweet pineapple were used to promote beautiful, soft and healthy looking skin. Today we know these ingredients contain the alpha hydroxy acids, antioxidants and other agents that actively moisturize, hydrate and reduce redness associated with dry, rough skin. Enjoy the daily rituals of the Boticario-recreated exclusively by Archipelago.

Coates Fitzwilliam Shaving Brushes

Coate's Fitzwilliam Shaving Brushes

This attractive little Coate’s branded shaving brush has a hand lathe-turned handle and is filled with pure badger hair. Simpsons produced this line of “Fitzwilliam” brushes under the Coate’s brand name but as far as we know, they have never before been offered for sale. The Fitzwilliam is modeled on a brush that first appeared during the 1930′s. These brushes date from before the Vulfix take over of the Simpson brand and were manufactured in Somerset, around 10 years ago.

The graduated handle shape has lamp blacked detail to both sides, presented in simple acetate packaging, no box.

One size only.
Knot size: We think it is 17 or 18mm
Pure badger hair fill.
Overall height: 3 1/2 inches
Bristle loft: 1 5/8 inches
Please note all measurements are intended as a guide.
Where hand made items are concerned, these can vary from brush to brush.

James Coate established his first brush works in London in 1847 but moved out to Somerset in 1875, opening factories in Axminster and Chard. Coate’s later amalgamated with A Simpson, another brush manufacturer in 1990. Our sister company TGS Products Ltd has aquired the Coate’s company and a limited number of these brushes were included in the sale.

Original Simpson Brushes

Original Simpson Shaving Brushes
Original Simpson Shaving Brushes

The Gentleman’s Shop has acquired a quantity of original Simpson handmade shaving brushes. These unique Somerset examples are from the private collection of the former owners and date from before 2008 when Simpson’s was sold to the new owners.

The brushes still display the original lamp-blacking model marks and have the water based transfers applied, which are designed to drop off after the first few uses. They are presented boxed in the original packaging, along with the Simpsons care leaflets enclosed.

Due to the unique nature of the collection and the limited quantity available, the retail prices shown here for these examples are higher than those currently demanded for the more modern brushes in the range. As far as we are aware, these are the only remaining brushes of their kind available.
